Change the game…
My Hot Yoga teacher training, the teaching skills:
The Game Changers course is set for August 5-11, @ my studio in Phuket.
For 7 days, we’re using active training methods to get results. It is not an “info-dump” or a lecture / theory based course, rather a training where the participants actively research and improve their teaching abilities.
To master skills, practice is necessary (not asana practice) with constructive feedback. In this course you will practice teaching, which is an amazing shortcut to activating your potential.
Just a few examples of what we focus on:
- Voice and non-verbals.
- Teaching personality.
- Energy and presence.
- Modifications for beginners and injured people.
- Hands-on adjustments for Hot Yoga.
- Kindness and compassion in teaching hot classes.
- The business of a studio and freelance teachers.

Okay, so today is a photo-taking day, I guess.
I did asana on the terrace, in the warmth of the afternoon sun. Each time a breeze went across, it felt as if God licked my face… A truly ‘divine’ experience!
After that, I had some sweet, red papaya with a a squeeze of lime juice – but no photo, I ate it all.

Have you practiced today?
For Hot Yoga teachers:
Have you practiced today?
If yes, a warm shower and a healthy meal, right? Life is good.
If not, what’s up with you? Don’t teach so many classes! No wonder you’re exhausting yourself… Reconnect with your practice, love your job again like you used to…

Notes for Students: A ‘modern’ Hatha yogi development?
For a Hatha yogi, the body is the beginning of the quest to achieve health!
When we say health, we do not mean a state of being where you are illness-free and don’t need to see a doctor.
Rather, I like to think that a healthy state is allowing the Hatha yogi to feel strong in the body, stable and balanced emotionally, mentally clear (able to focus at will) and finally, connected to the spiritual core of their being.
As a Hatha yogi, I approach my self-knowledge through understanding of my own body. Its mechanics, habits, points of weakness and strengths… This is the external practice of Hatha yoga.
For me personally, it makes sense to begin with the ‘yoga’ of the body. It is relatively easy to feel the body, as it is quite concrete and tangible – easy to discover.
The better self-knowledge that we achieve on the purely physical level (body) can now be translated into a better way of understanding how our mind (intellect) and heart (emotions) work.
A spiritual expansion follows closely through meditation (and prayer!). Once the body is healthy and strong, the emotions stable, and the mind clear – meditation is available. That’s the internal practice.
The external and internal practices ultimately lead to a grand improvement in self-awareness, self-understanding… As the Greek philosophers advised you to “Know Thyself”, so would I (a Hatha yoga teacher) recommend for you to proceed in the following progressive improvements, developing from one step leading to the next:
1. Attention > 1a. (Relaxation is now possible) >>> 2. The Breath (consciously breathing leads to emotional stability and mental clarity) >>> 3. Mindfulness >>> 4. Self-awareness (the ability to observe and understand yourself) >>> 5. Self-regulation (work on yourself to be a better person) >>> 6. Compassion (understand others, with kindness) >>> 7. All Is One.
So there.

A Teacher? It’s Clear.
As a yoga teacher, I want to be ‘CLEAR’.
Clear eyes and skin, clear communication (verbal and non-verbal), mind clear from worry. Clean, fit body.
Clearly ooze a warm-hearted, positive outlook on life; a friendly, confident attitude towards people (strangers, too!).
Clearly living out of a common spiritual crisis, high in soul-stamina!
Otherwise, I’d be like a hair-dresser with bad hair, a financial adviser in a junk car, or a stiff chiropractor!

The Problem with Bikram Yoga
Reblogged from Writer on the Prowl:
I recently purchased a Groupon for a local Bikram Yoga studio. For $30 I get 10 classes. It was a great deal so I bought it on sight, and a friend followed suit.
I was worried about my friend who has a heart condition that is made worse in hot, humid conditions. She regularly passes out on gross summer days. Doing yoga in a 105 degree room seemed ill-advised.

Yoga Teacher: a question
If your teaching is not rejuvenating you, revitalizing you, nourishing you – something is not right.
As a Yoga Teacher, your work should be making you more wholesome physically, emotionally and mentally robust, more loving, and spiritually more vital.
The more I teach, the more I achieve. I am growing. But I am not teaching too many classes. Are you?
In my teacher training workshops, we consider the Teacher development of that sort very closely.

Knowledge or Skills?
When setting a goal to be a better Yoga teacher, it is important to consider the difference between KNOWLEDGE and SKILL.
The quality of our work as teachers is directly based on skills, and only indirectly on what we know (knowledge).
It is the same with learning to fly a helicopter. You don’t want to give someone the keys to flying a helicopter just because they flew as a passenger, went to a lecture on helicopter history and theory, right?
If you want someone to learn to fly a helicopter, lectures, theory and passenger-experience are not going to help directly.
Instead, 2 things are needed to learn and improve any skill:
1. Have the learner practice the task.
2. Give them useful feedback.
That’s it.
Practicing to teach a better Yoga class is like that.
And so, The Game Changers teacher training was born: http://hotyogaphuket.com/game-changers/

Skillfulness.
Teaching a better Hot Yoga class is mostly a matter of SKILLFULNESS, and much less a matter of knowledge.
Teaching SKILLS are not improved by more knowledge, or more asana.
Skills are improved by practice and feedback.

Attracting Beginners’ Attention
Hot Yoga.
Beginners are not paying attention.
They are wired for distractions. Short, distributed attention. They switch focus a lot from one thing to another…
So, how do you attract Beginners’ attention?
Tell them stories. Surprise them. Show them shiny things. Tell them the other Beginners are doing it. Make them curious. Talk to their ‘emotional’ side…

Hi Tomasz,
My name is Caroline, I was on the TT Absolute Hot Yoga Teacher Training. I have just returned from Australia where I was for a year and am currently in the process of establishing a studio.
Everything is going well so far. I am really enjoying the teaching so much however I am finding that a lot of my classes consist of 90- 100% of total beginners (brand new and experienced) as I am only starting up. I have just watched your video on ‘beginners and hot yoga’ and I was wondering if you would any advice on teaching a room full of beginners?
I am finding it quite tough as I don’t have a huge amount of teaching experience myself (50 hours) although I know I am confident in my ability to teach but of course I am constantly looking to improve.
I pride my studio on being able to relate to modern society, in terms of explaining things well in class, making sure people are enjoying the Yoga and working had at the same time. What I have been doing so far is explaining certain key things but at the same time also ignoring some of the mistakes they are making as I need to keep the pace and intensity of the class up?
I am just wondering if you would agree with the way I am handling this?or if you would have any sort of advice?
Thank you – Namaste
Caroline

Hi Caroline!
Great to hear from you. I remember you very well. Congratulations on your new place – so happy, right?
I read your email carefully.
When I opened my studio in Phuket 4 years ago, I also had ONLY beginners in my classes, tough job! Before that in Rayong, in Thailand, my first yoga class there, we’d just opened the studio, the room was full. 55 people. 52 Brand-new. Only 3 spoke English!!!! Shit!!!!
)))The good thing is, that once you figure out how to teach them well, everything else will seem easy by comparison.
It is MASTERY in teaching when you can teach the room full of beginners well.
Here are some quick thoughts that come to my mind, some things I would perhaps do in your situation.
I assume you’re teaching Absolute series, 90 minute classes, and heated, right?— get a ‘beginner’ trial that is NOT a one-class. get a week unlimited and tell them they need to come 3-5 times that week, or a 5-class-card-in-10-days series, sell it cheaply, this will help them get used to the intensity and the heat. tell them that 1 class is not enough to try hot yoga, they must try a few classes in a few days, so that they can feel and see the difference.
— teaching class, make sure you are NOT over-instructing. simplify instructions to make them VERY basic.
— and demonstrate more often, but without stopping the class.
— avoid correcting them, rather encourage, support, smile, tell them they are doing well. allow them to be wrong. (only stop them if they’re going to hurt themselves.)
— if you’re out of time, you’re talking too much. talk less, breathe more, smile more, give them a gentle pat on the shoulder.
— you can slow down the pace of the class, if you need to. nobody says you MUST do 2 sets, or the full sequence. for example, for now, you can skip the twisting prayer utkatasana, do only one set standing head to knee, etc. so that you don’t “kill them”. also, AVOID the ‘smooth transition’, bring them up to standing instead, then go to the next triangle. give them 1 minute savasana at the end of the standing postures, then sit up to staff pose. save time and skip the 2 sage postures, give them a longer savasana at the end of the class, stay with them quietly.
— make sure you take time before and after class to explain all benefits of practice + why drink water + why rest enough + how often to practice. remember, that what you and i know, and take it for granted, is big news to them. you have to take time to explain.
— DON”T tell your students that you are a new teacher. they don’t need to know that.
— read everything on my weblog at http://tomaszgoetel.wordpress.com/ - there’s more stuff that will be useful to you, I hope!
hope this helps, Caroline. let me know.
if you want, you can forward my answers to other friends from your training, i’m sure many of them face the same questions! and if you let me, i will copy/paste your question to my weblog? it’s a common one…
let me know what you think!
and more questions are welcomewith love,

Be Inspired.
Hot Yoga advanced skills, day 5: I bring out the BIG GUNS:
Be inspired, and teach from that!
You’re not inspired? If you are full of memories, there is no room for inspiration. Forgive, forget, create space. Inspiration will come pouring in! Become inspired.
Now, teach! People will be inspired just by being around you…
Posted by Tomasz Goetel [Hot Yoga] on March 15, 2013
http://tomaszgoetel.wordpress.com/2013/03/15/be-inspired/
Important. Big words!
New and inexperienced (or poorly trained!) Hot Yoga Teachers get insecure about teaching the same sequence each class, so they mess with the flow of postures, or think that learning different sequencing will inspire their Students more.
The issue is with the Teacher. She has the responsibility to be interesting and fresh. This has little to do with the sequence!
So, then… This is important:
- Discover or re-discover the richness of your own practice of the same sequence! You don’t need to go to India or Himalaya for this.
- Develop a ‘relaxed awareness’: the right attention to evaluate yourself.
- Objectively observe: ‘Perceived Personality’. ‘Character’ (Who-you-are-as-a-Teacher).
- Through a heightened level of self-awareness, evaluate and regulate YOUR teaching.
- Contemplate a burning desire to be a kinder, more loving, more compassionate Teacher.
Now, that being said, it is certainly ESSENTIAL for us to continue to educate ourselves, practice various sequences, and discover new ways of alternative sequencing for Hot Yoga. Variety is crucial, as it stimulates your Students interest, challenges the weaknesses, as well as brings some fun into the game.
But don’t believe the hype!

Asana. Integration.
In asana, you’re training not only your body to do the posture…
You are training your mind to do the posture.
You are training your heart to do the posture.
The soul is quietly watching your progress.

Improvement and Proficiency: Hot Yoga Teacher’s Considerations
To continue improving my abilities as a Yoga teacher, I must be able to make time to objectively consider my own work, and to make time to learn from other teachers.
Even if I’m a very proficient Yoga teacher I have some weak points, and I should be aware of what those are.
I must strive to be very conscious of my strengths and weaknesses.
The minute I cannot perceive my weaknesses, I will halt the possibility of my growth.
I should closely watch other teachers teaching class. Even if their skills are not better than mine, there will always be some good points to their work.
Learning from meeting and watching other teachers can clearly help me develop new approaches to teaching, and new practical skills.
~ Those sort of considerations are within the essence of all my self-study, and my Hot Yoga teacher training get-togethers, like ‘The Game Changers‘ and the ‘Going Pro!’Posted by Tomasz Goetel [Hot Yoga] on February 25, 2013

Are you serious about your Yoga practice?
Overheard somewhere, here’s a great story:
One of Buddha’s students was working very seriously on his spiritual training, but he wasn’t advancing at all.
Buddha came to him and said ‘I heard that when you lived at home you were a very good player of the harp. Is that true?’
The student answered ‘Yes, I did play very well.’
Buddha went on ‘When you played, what happened if the strings were too tight?’
‘The sound wasn’t very good.’
‘And if they were too loose?’
‘If they were too loose, the sound was also bad.’
‘So what did you do to the strings in order to create a good sound?’
The student replied ‘Neither too tight nor too loose, but tuned correctly to give the right pitch.’
Buddha said ‘Our training is the same thing. If you work with too much effort your heart becomes too frantic. You cannot find calm. But if you don’t use enough effort it becomes boring and unproductive.’

Hot yoga 30-day challenge? Are you sure?

hotyogaphuket.com
Not a big fan of the Hot Yoga 30-40-60-day challenges!
I think doing heated classes daily without a day’s rest is too much.
Running this in a studio is a bit uneducated, or not well thought-out. Especially if the room tends to be overheated and / or lacks fresh air!
And allowing or telling your Students to do doubles or TRIPLES (2 or 3 classes back-to-back) to catch up for the missed days is just insanely unhealthy! (Teachers, keep those hot-yoga-heat-obsessions at half-blast, seriously…)
Better idea? From my teacher Jimmy Barkan: ‘Five days a week for two months.’
Then, one knows for themselves how often to practice down the road, and their life will flourish.

How can I help my Students better, in a more compassionate way?
How to handle problematic situations?
How can I communicate the material more successfully?

What if I am bored?
How can I teach without “dialogue”?
How can I teach more than just one boring sequence?
What about other sequences, hip-openers, core, Hot Vinyasa?
How to teach when nobody listens?
How can I do corrections and hands-on adjustments properly and kindly?
How to go beyond instruction, and actually inspire my Students?

Hot Yoga Evolution-style teaching considerations have proven valuable for teachers from many different styles of hot yoga, e.g Bikram, Moksha, Absolute, etc.
In this video, we take a look at teaching class standing at the front of the yoga room.

Notes on teaching asana classes
If the entire material I am presenting is INSTRUCTION, my class will be lame, exhausting and not well-attended.
However, if I am willing and able to take chances on humor, having some fun, developing an interesting teaching personality…
If I am able to make time to address the benefits, other relevant information that my students may find interesting…
If I am willing to be vulnerable and take chances on whether they will well-receive or NOT receive something I say from the heart -
now I am onto something BIG!
My classes will flourish, and importantly, I will nicely develop as teacher, and hopefully as a better and happier person, too!

Yo!
Yoga teachers!
I’m taking names for the 1-week advanced teacher training at my studio in Phuket, Thailand, March 11-17, 2013.
I call it ‘The Game Changers’.
To bring excellence to our work, we must make 3 main considerations:
> WHAT we teach (teaching content, Student’s needs, class experience, teacher’s toolbox)
>> HOW we teach (communication, attention, kindness, approach to Beginners)
>>> WHO WE ARE when we work (integrity, personality, compassion)
Learn in 7 days what took me years to discover!
